My tranny (88 9kt-120k miles) has never been very smooth, and I'm convinced I have a slave cylinder or pressure plate problem. But atleast with my gearing, a shift to 2nd at 55mph will put you right near redline. can't see any point in that shift. 3rd at 60mph will net you 4k rpm. Not valve floating revs, but enough to stress the syncros on my 2L. Assuming that the trannies have the same syncronizing capacity, your 2.3L should be a bit worse due to the heavier rotating assembly of the bigger engine + balance shafts(unless they reduced the weight of the flywheel). I have accustomed myself to the fact that most any downshift must be accompanied by a blip of the throttle while in neutral(clutch pedal out) to match the revs of the upcoming lower gear.
I have also recently test driven a 92 turbo(70k miles), and the box and syncronizing capacity were much smoother than my tranny. If gearchanges seem equally bad in all gears(as mine does) you might check into a clutch problem.
