I am on my third SAAB. My wife still drives our first a 900S 16V. It will clock up 200,000 miles this week (bought at 120,000 miles). My first 9000 was a Carlsson 7,000 UKP 3.5 yrs ago from a SAAB specialist - immaculate, very fast and gorgeous. It was utterly reliable. Took it from 87,500 miles to 133,000 miles. The 5sp gearbox was great - no problems at all.
Unfortunatley I was rear-ended whilst stationary by a rep doing 80mph and the car was written off. I walked away without a scratch. I bought a replacement privately a '92 9000 CSE 2.3 Turbo Auto. 200 bhp - all the toys except TCS. It had 135,000 miles on the clock. The Auto gearbox had been rebuilt 20,000 miles ago. I had a survey done so I new what had to be done. It was advertised for 3,300 UKP, I paid 2,350 UKP. 670 UKP for a full service, engine mount, new front discs (rotors) new pads all round. 330 UKP for 4 new tyres and a new front downpipe. It drives like a dream. I have also had the timing chain and balance chain replaced as a precaution.
I found this site after I had made the purchase so I have been twitched about the Auto box. In fact its proabbly the car that one would be least advised to buy! The gearbox oil has been changed and my mechanic tells me its one of the smoothest he has come across. So I have now learnt to enjoy the very different characteristics of this 'buisiness-man's express' vice the 'turbo boy race characteristics' of the Carlsson.
I have now put 10,000 miles on it in the last 6 months. It has been utterly reliable and I expect it to continue to be so. I'll probably run it to 250,000 miles. If the gearbox has to be rebulit in that time so be it. I know that I will get reliable and affordable motoring from the car despite it being a '92 Auto.
My advice is if you like the car get it. If you don't DIY, find a good mechanic or SAAB specilaist. Also use the advice on theses pages and Quasi's site to help you know what to look for and keep the cost down. You will then have comfortable and reliable motoring for many years to come.
The icing on the cake is that the car came with an lpg conversion so with fuel prices as they are in UK I am saving 45% of the cost of runing the car on petrol.
Go and enjoy that Griffin
