Wide-band air fuel ratio sensor experience?

I would like to install a wide-band air-fuel ratio sensor in my 99 Turbo as I believe that it (and frankly all of them in US spec) has always run leaner than is good for engine durability. It's easy enough to remove the existing O2 sensor and disconnect it to leave the lambda system in open loop/default mode. The typical wide-band UEGO (Universal Exhaust Gas Oxygen) sensor can screw into the standard O2 sensor fitting. The only concern I have is that the O2 sensor in the 99 Turbo gets very hot at it's location in the exhaust manifold - I've literally seen them melted. But, hopefully if the engine is running properly that won't be a problem.

Has anyone used an air fuel ration sensor and do you have any experience to share?
