I did something similar for my 1976 99 GL federal car. I don't have lambda or a cat, so I used a tail pipe probe. I used it for tuning the CIS and I wanted it to be removable.

For the gauge, I mounted it in a hobby box and powered the box from either the battery or the lighter. The wire for the tail pipe probe ran through the side window into the car if I was driving the car. It has data logging into a laptop.

The tailpipe probe isn't accurate at idle, there isn't enough flow. But at high idle speed or while driving it's great. My CIS system runs 14.7 under most conditions, it's very steady.

Putting the sensor into the exhaust would be much better. For the 1978, you will need the probe before the cat, and I'm not sure how your system would run without the oxygen sensor. I wonder if you could use the wideband sensor for the lambda, that would be ideal.
