Project vented rotors, advice needed

I am at the midpoint of Project Vented Rotors, which is replacing the front end on my 1976 99 with Vented rotors, hub, etc. from a 1987 900 turbo. I have the 99 axle out and the hub off. I have 2 questions.
1) My question is about the inner tripod grease. What came out was black and fairly liquid, almost like oil. It could be old and cooked. What grease should I use? My boot kit did not come with grease. Someone mentioned redline CV2, which essentially is a very nice CV grease. Should I just put CV grease in the inner, or is there something better? CV grease is quite a bit thicker than what came out.
2) What is the best way to reassemble? I think I want to put the axle into the back of the CV and attach the boot while it is out of the car. Then put the hub and axle assembly including ball joints all onto the car at once. Is that the best way? The other way would be to undo the axle nut and put the axle and CV in, then put the hub on.
Also, when I pulled the 99 axle from the CV, the axle just fell out of the CV. There was no circlip. Very strange, but it may explain why I was getting funny noises up front.
