I just talked to Dan at Swedish Auto Factory, (whose shop kindly separated my 99 axle from the CV with his press) and said they use CV grease in both the inners and outers. Townsend Imports site says he uses Castrol MP grease on the inners, CV grease on the outers. One thing for sure, CV grease in the CV joint!
My concern, and the reason I asked, is the stuff that came out of the inners was much more liquid than the stuff in the outers. It barely resembled grease. It seems like the tripod needle bearings need a fairly liquid grease. It's possible that my inner's grease was just horribly worn and broken down.
In my experience, plain wheel bearing grease is more liquid than CV grease, and thus seems more appropriate. However, looking at the specs, the Red Line CV2 grease is the best performing. And the packaging on the Valvoline greases show good, better, best with best being their Synthetic Synpower grease which is also suitable for CV joints. Right now I'm leaning towards using Red Line all the way around.
