I would think if that car was sitting for 5 years, the first order of business would be to pull the 19mm plug on the gas tank and get that crap out of there. Why try to start the car with known bad gas? Whatever you do, do not try to hot-wire the pump to drain the tank. A friend of mine tried that and burned down his garage, half his house, and three of his cars.
I have heard horror stories, which I don't have 100% facts or personal experience, but pulling the tank can be nearly impossible.(I have heard they can weld themselves in place, possibly from the undercoating which is sprayed on at the factory). It's not uncommon for the tanks to develop rust holes at the lower seams, which would require the tank to be removed for repair or replaced. You can scope that out when you get the back end jacked up and the wheels off.
I have never used fuel additives, so I won't comment on their use.
You could un-hook the top(horizontal) fuel hose from the fuel pressure regulator, stick the hose in a container, disconnect the plug on the distributor for the injection points, then crank the engine and let the pump run FRESH fuel through the system to flush it.
I am assuming this is a d-jet injected engine. Correct? If you read my post from last week, I have the tester to run through the injection system to make sure all of the components are doing what they should do. You'd have to get the car to me and let me hook the machine up and go through the system. Maybe you could have your dad trailer the car to my house before you take it back to Columbus.
