I've had three 99 that in the end needing new or refurbished tanks to solve their problems for good (lost the head on one car because it started running so lean due to a clogged filter and pump pickup that it started running super hot...all of a sudden. Removing the tank is not that hard...even if they are stuck on as Doug mentioned. A tap here and a pry there and everything is freed up. The plug is not going to get hurt by removing it...that's what it's there for. If you're worried about messing up threads then I don't know what to say other than go slowly?
