Hmmm, Value doesn’t support expense…

I agree with you Bob regarding the 99 I have been slapping around for the past month or so – if indeed it is me that you mentioned advising. But please keep this in mind – ‘Value’ is a ‘construct’. Yes, my expenses for this 99 are at the 1,200 mark w/o labor. However, I am an East Coast kid, so I am agreement with DougM. Actually, I had never seen a 99 prior to Oregon despite the New England area being a very successful market for Saab for years (I’m sure I’d seen them, but didn’t note it). After moving out here I sometimes end up in vintage overload. And I have learned that a west coast price is not gospel.
To expose myself further I will give an example. I used to be a Renault Le Car guy – 8 of them to be exact. The last one, about 5 years ago, I got on eBay out of TX. I paid about $1,300 because it was straight and it was MY desired car. The Le Car as a model hit resale bottom around that time where the ‘value’ on the street was about $1 - $500, but in Rhode Island there were only three on the road I think – so its ‘value’ to me was much higher. Two years later I was the one to sell it, on eBay – and the same guy who sold it to me bought it back for the original price of $1,300. Again, the ‘value’ was set by the person’s desire – not a blue book, or an insurance company, or the used auto market trends in say France or Finland. Now, lately the Le Car’s are selling for over $3,000 if it is kinda straight (probably because of the Mini’s popularity). The book value is still down in the low hundreds.
I know that the orange 99 I got out here in Oregon would be a good fit back in Rhode Island for the right buyer and a much higher sale price. Portland is certainly not the ‘value’ yard stick for the whole country– I would bet its actually a Saab oddity if you look across the country. The ‘value’ becomes the money you get in your hand the day someone else drives it away.
