Hey Bob,
It would be easy for the electrically inclined to make the pump two speed. The davies-craig controller they sell does exactly this. It is a adjustable rheostat controlled by a temp probe in the coolant. Works very well, but it is pricey.
As to warm-up and the heater core: I have a restrictor in my system, so it works much like the factory system. I have pre t-stat flow through the heater core, as well as post t-stat. The idea of the restrictor is the coolant has to have a place to go if the core is closed or open, and it should have clear "in", and "out" So there is a restriction in the out line, making it easier for coolant to flow. My heater actually blows slightly hotter than it did from the factory (nice on days like this), and the heater control valve works, so it closes off hot coolant just as well.
Gert's situation is very unique as he has a much earlier 99 that required some serious customization. Warm-up time on my own car is not overly lengthy, and the efficiency of the system is just right: Temp gauge sits in the middle of the scale all the time. I can just get it to rise a needle's width on long uphill full boost runs in the middle of summer.
What do you know about your "american ewp"? Is it inline, and kind of bullet shaped? Let me know about how they plumbed it in...
Talk to you later.
Craig
