The heater core is ancillary. With the thermostat closed, coolant circulates through the block, head, manifold and then through a bypass passage (the small nipple in the water pump cover) back to the water pump. This circuit is always operating regardless if the heater valve is opened or closed. (You still need to circulate water in the block when the heater valve is closed. On 900 engines, there is no bypass passage. The heater control valve always circulates water either through it or around it.) On 1977 and later cars an improvement was made in the thermostat and its housing which closes off the bypass passage when the thermostat is wide open forcing all water through the radiator. This is a recommended upgrade for '76 and earlier 2 liter cars.
