I've read a few stories about the ebay shafts and impellers, but it's a risk I'm going to take(I have two spare 8 cog idler shafts in the barn just in case). Who's to say those who wrote the stories did everything by the book and with the proper tool? The pump goes in blind, so there's no way of knowing for sure if any damage is done until you run the car for a bit.
I looked at my pump rather briefly the other day, and noticed some crud on the upper sealing surface where it mates to the block, but it's just a guess if it was leaking there. I was guessing it was leaking between the seal and the bottom of the impeller, because I know for a fact that surface is not machined smooth. I'll make sure everything is as clean as can be before re-assembly, but I thought I did all that the last time like you. It seems unlikely the shaft can be worn...I mean the rubber seal isn't going to wear into a cast iron shaft IMO.
