Find the noisy bearing... Posted by patquin [Email] (#9) [Profile/Gallery] (more from patquin) on Sat, 22 Nov 2003 17:36:39 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
Every now and then I hear what might be a bad wheel bearing. It sounds like a faint grinding sound, in sync with wheel rotational speed. It comes and goes, doesn't change significantly with left or right turns, braking, or load. Unfortunately, I can't distinguish which side of the car is loudest either when it happens. The culprit could be a wheel bearing, CV joint, a transmission bearing or the differential gear. I shudder to think what a transmission bearing/differential gear replacement would entail, if it comes to that.
I've been thinking of jacking the car, running it while on the jacks, checking temperatures and getting out the stethoscope to try to isolate the problem. Or I could just start pulling the drive shafts systematically. Anyone with experience, ideas or a preferable plan?
This problem is keeping me too close to home--I want to join in on some club events next year!
