I have very similar symptoms with a 1968 96 stroker but only when car is under a load and have yet to isolate the problem. I have not been able to replicate the noise on jack stands, probably not enough load. I suspect a universal joint; when the noise first appeared I repacked the right front CV boot-joint located closest to the transaxle had 2-3 months of silence. I too could use some guidance from anyone with experience, ideas or a preferable plan.
