Thanks to all for the advice on how to determine which bearing/CV-joint is acting up. Here's the final plan: apply emergency brake; jack up the car on one side to free a wheel; start the car and slowly increase speed on the free wheel. If it's noisy, then it's on that side of the differential. If there's no noise, switch sides. Then on the noisy side pull the wheel and drive shaft. Run the car again after that. If the noise returns, then it must be in the differential/internal bearing on that side and the transmission needs to come out. If the sound disappears, the problem is in the driveshaft that's out of the car.
Now, if the transmission has to come out, well then it's time to think of a clutch.., maybe do a little cleaning up in the engine compartment...,and oh yes, find a V4 transmission rebuilder! Fingers crossed.
