might be tough in a 95/96...there is not much room in front of the tranny for even a straight 4 cylinder motor, hence the use of the V4 that happened to be available from Ford of Europe at the time. I also think the tranny would struggle to handle the torque, and yes the ratios are too short. On top of thet, you'd have to beef up the engine mounts, especailly the gearbox rear mount as diesels vibrate and transmit a lot of noise to the cabin by doing so. A diesel would also give you some weight issues up front. Be a lot easier to do a 99 maybe?
Anyhow...don't give up...maybe a euro 3 cylinder diesel is a way forward and would be a way of addresing that classic car issue returning the car to being a 3 cylinder!!!
