I've been feeling a mite cantankerous all week, so forgive me if this post is a bit testy as well...
My understanding is that 'downstream' from the front muffler, you can use just about any exhaust configuration you like... without _any_ penalty in performance, mileage or longevity.
By design, the front muffler provides the exhaust back pressure required for normal engine operation... all else is for silencing only... and only impedes flow.
I've run any number of systems - including a completely straight 2" pipe from the manifold back - and with each, the engine ran much as if I'd had a stock exhaust... (though I don't recommend similar experimentation with an entirely straight system as I think it _does_ have risks and consequences).
The Chilton's manual performance back pages recommends a short, open 2" pipe leading from a (modified GT) front muffler.
The science of expansion chamber tuning is way over my head, but I believe the above to be accurate.
For what it's worth...
Peter B.
