The reason I opened up my tranny was a loud whining which appeared to be a bearing. I replaced the ball bearings on the counter and primary shafts and I would guess that I did not get the nut secured properly or I did not shim the cover correctly and the nut came loose and let the shaft flop around and broke the teeth off one of the gears (I don't remember exactly which one; it has been a while since I rebuilt that transmission.)
I did not replace any of the ring and pinion parts so that did not change and no, I did not completely take it apart.
I am the person who said they had just had a tranny rebuilt by Jack Ashcraft and had confidence in his abilities. Yes, anyone can make a mistake and all mechanical parts can fail but Jack has 30 or 40 years experience working on these and I believe he has the experience to know what to do and knows what steps to take to make sure it is done correctly. As to a whine, when I got the gearbox back from Jack his instructions said to expect it to whine for a while as new gear surfaces mated and new parts went through a break-in period. I am still doing some other restoration projects on my 96 and have not put the tranny into service yet. I hope to do that later this summer.
As I said before - go for it. You may turn out to be the best transmission rebuilder anywhere.
