Hi Bill,

Your troubleshooting methods are good. Here's a couple of thoughts from my experience with multiple VSaabs.

1. I would jack up the back of the car and drain the fuel tank. There's a simple drain screw in the center, near the rear axle. I would us a funnel and a filter to catch what comes out. THAT will tell you if your hypothesis is correct- that junk from the sender seal is causing a clog.

2. Have you loosened the fuel cap when the problem occurs? It's a vented system and sometimes the vent can get clogged. That will reduce fuel flow. If you crack the cap and you hear air hissing, that's a problem with the vent.

3. What does the fuel filter look like? Is is clogged with junk? If it's plastic, you can see it. If it's metal, it might be worth cutting it apart. And there might be a filter on the carb inlet, depending on what carb you're using.

4. Another troubleshooting method is this: when the problem occurs, disconnect the fuel line and blow some air into it, towards the tank. Does the problem clear right up? If so, then junk is collecting somewhere, most likely in the tank outlet tube.

5. The previous owner had the tank out for cleaning. That says he or she might have had crud problems in the tank. That's another clue. AND... did they use a tank sealer? Sometimes, that sealer stuff can reduce the pickup tube diameter (or even clog it). Might be worth it to run a wire up through and see if it catches.

6. I know people that have cut a wide hole in the top of the tank for access, then had it welded closed. A good gas tank shop can do this- if there are any left!

7. Finally, I've gone to electric pumps on all my VSaabs. Why? The cars don't all get driven every week and the gas evaporates. With an electric pump, I turn on the ignition, hear the pump run for 30 seconds, then the start is immediate. No cranking and cranking to fill the bowl. I install the pump under the rear seat with a filter between the tank and the pump. I also put a filter before the carb- overkill yes- I guess I just like to see what's going on when I lift the hood. I know, I know- VSaabs ran just fine for 50 years with mechanical pumps, so why do something else? Well, the old ones are pretty tired- millions and millions of flex over the years. And new mechanical ones are a little harder to find and getting pricey. When a VSaab comes into the stable, I upgrade the carb to a Weber if it came with an old leaky Ford or Solex, and I put in an electric pump. That's my story, but I also respect those that are happy to stay mechanical.

So there's a few ideas, hopefully, there're helpful.

Let us know what you find when you drain the tank!
