Thanks. I should have mentioned, old filter had some crud in it, nothing too crazy. New one looks clean after about a tank of gas. I did try running with the gas cap off when having problems to no effect, so that should be good. I blew down into the tank as well while dragging the line, although it's hard to say if it had an effect since I was doing other things at the same time. Good point about them maybe using some dodgy tank-sealing methods and messing with the pickup.

I think I will go ahead with the fuel pump sooner or later. Also eyeing the Ashcraft Weber book. Can you comment on pump brands? I see the Airtex E8016S recc'd on this board, but it looks like they're not being made. I also see a lot of praise for Facet pumps, but other people say the noise is intolerable. Tempted to get a cheap one from rockauto with about the right specs...
