I always thought it was just to save wear and tear on the clutch and to improve gas mileage. I never used it much except for one time I crossed the
Continental Divide on I-80 in Wyoming going west, its about a 10-15 mi downgrade. I was coasting along about 80 and this wild gal in a caddilac
passed me on the right hand side, (on the shoulder). She had to be doing
95 at least. Showed me!
