I changed my '90 C900 over to synthetic at 120k miles with no increase in leaks (it already leaked a bit when I bought it five years ago w/113k miles on it). You'll get more protection from good quality, 10k-mile-old full syn than you will from 3k-mile-old conventional oil. It looks like Mobil 1's new 5W-40 synthetic (unfortunately labeled "Truck & SUV oil") might offer the best combination of price, protection, & cleanliness. I'm still waiting for analysis results before I make a firm decision. Otherwise, I think you could run Shell's Rotella T syn 5W-40 or nearly any of the other Mobil 1 synthetics with excellent results. M1's 0W-40 would probably offer better protection than the Shell, but at a slightly higher price.
1) Yes, I would run A-Rx for my own peace-of-mind. We bought our '99 9³ used with 16k miles on it (no documatation or manuals) & it's now got almost 48k, so I know what most of the history has been. It's got no leaks or oil consumption. Still, because of the unknown period of use, I'm going to run A-Rx thru it. I'll add it to the 9k mi old M1 0W-40 & run it for 2k miles before dumping it & refilling with fresh M1.
2) My son just got an '85 C900 with 150k miles on it. It's only had two previous owners (both in this area), & has all the maintenance records & documentation going back to the window stickers from when the car was bought. It's got an 8v N/A engine & shows no indication of any sludge, but the engine & tranny both leak. I've finished the A-Rx run in the tranny, but I'm still on the engine run. I know the leaks have slowed, but I haven't been able to determine if they've stopped yet (it's been snowy for the past couple of weekends so I haven't been under the car to see). Gas mileage appears to be slowly improving, but that's harder to quantify this time of year.
I'm also running A-Rx in my '90 C900, even though it's an N/A engine that's been on a syn diet for the past 50k miles. It's running better than ever after 2k miles into the application, & I think all the drips have stopped at this point.
