Much of the problem is due to a super fine mesh on the oil pickup screen. This, along with the fact that the pickup is positioned extreamly low in the sump seem to cause oil starvation problems in these engines. I suspect that as the pickup screen becomes clogged, it futher exacerbates the problem.
I don't buy into the arguement about the oil being at fault. Sure, synthetic oil is superior to conventional oil, and it will help keep the pickup clean, but you shouldn't have to use it in a no frills naturally aspirated engine. Keep in mind the 2.1 liter 4 cylinder engine in the older 900's had over 10 to 1 compression. I've never heard of any sludge problems with them. Nor have I heard of any sludge problems with the V6.
I suspect that if you were to replace the pickup screen with a courser screen, it would help alieviate the sludge problem. That said, if I owned a 2.3 liter 900, I'd just use synthetic oil, and forget about it.
