The arguement I was trying to make is that there is no reason why a 150hp 2.3 liter engine should require expensive oil, changed often. The defect is the engine, not the oil. I am sure the owner's manual calls for a 5000 (I seem to remember it specifing 10,000) or higher oil change interval, and I'm sure it doesn't specify synthetic oil. I'm sure not too many engines following that guideline made it much past 100k. As I've said before, I also don't buy into the arguement of the ring being closer to the top of the piston causing the oil to break down. Most modern engines are designed this way. You don't see this problem on too many other cars. The problem is at least partially caused by the design of the oil pickup. I'm positive that if it were redesigned, and the car had its oil changed at a resonable interval, it would reduce if not eliminate the sludge issue. The metal particals and coke should at least have a chance to get to the oil filter to be collected rather then collecting on their first obstruction, the inaccesable pickup screen.
On top of the sludge issue, its not all that uncommon for the 2.3 to have a balance shaft chain failure. I believe that repair is close to $2000. Thats almost as bad as a timing belt failure on a V6. At least the V6 has enough power to make the car fun to drive.
