...Saab maintenance schedules saying 10K is fine! I don't know what these are based on (european standards are different .. probably because of the "standard" oil being higher grade synthetics (?) rather than the cheapest 75 cents a quart 5w-30 that jiffy lube puts in), but it leaves a lot of non-technically inclined owners not knowing how they should maintain their vehicles.
Mine is a perfect example. I bought it w/ 120K on it. Every major maintenance (according to the schedule) had been done by an indy saab specialist. I feel that the owner was doing what he thought was the good thing to do. But 10K oil change intervals w/ dino oil have left me, the new owner, with a car that looks great on the outside, runs well, but has significant sludge issues (2.3L NA). No I did not get a Saab inspection done before I bought ... and I may lose in the end, but I am trying to do what I can to counter act the lack of maintenance (even though maintained according to saab standards as published in the maintenance schedules).
My Toyota Sienna is the same. 1999 Manual says oil only needs to be changed in 5K intervals. Well, I have done it at 3K every time. Now there are a GLUT of siennas out there w/ sludge issues. Are the manufacturers at fault for misleading owners with the need for regular change intervals (esp. when done by cheapo lube outfits w/ low quality oil)? I don't know .. but I do know I have learned by seeing the inside of my valve cover that no one will change my oil any more besides me.
my 2 bits.
