The sludge solids will be close to the same density as the oil, so they would not settle or stay settled out when running, so the depth of the pickup is probably not an issue.
Older engines had cooler running compression rings. You cannot compare to the C900's!
The only thing that will forms solids that will block the pickup screen is polymerized oil. If its full of metal chips, there obviously was a lube failure. The oil was not good enough or not changed.
"Sure, synthetic oil is superior to conventional oil, and it will help keep the pickup clean" --as that would not break down.
So these engines do have higher oil requirements than other engines. I still think that there is probably an element of neglected maintenance or 'bargan' oil. The oil is failing. A combo of higher requirements and lacking maintenance I expect. Ony a few engines are having this problem. What are the variables? The oil and how often it is changed. And this is controlled by the owner.
