so, it is the sprockets and not the balance chain that is scoring the pressure relief valve? THe picture is helpful: to orient myself, what is the hole at the bottom? THis is the oil pan removed, and is that the pickup hole?

I recognize the potential problem I have. It may not be solved when balance chain is removed. But I could do this, and NOT remove the engine to get at the timing cover to do it the "Right" way. So, balance chain removal and pressure relief valve replacement. If problems, then I guess I am messed up and will have to evaluate what to do then. But I could not justify it now on this car.

THe light flickers now OCCASSIONALY at low idle, but it has been behaving "good" for the past 6 months. So it may not be doomed yet if I can do some preventative work, I hope. BUt your advice is valuable, so give me your best opinion.
