The valve cover showed fairly significant black sooty caking ... not just a little "jell" as others have reported. Most was around the timing chain side.
I recognize my balance chains are worn and that is probably what has scored the relief valve (according to previous posts by you, Anders). Local indy and saabnet sponsor ANDREW'S of PRINCETON (MN) has indicated that removing the balance chain through the oil pan (cut a link and pull out) has worked very well for them on their "loaners", without needing to block or take care of the guides inside. Seems odd, but they have had good success, they say, and have done it many times.
This, then, is the reason I feel I need to remove the pan. First to get at the pick up tube / screen, which I am suspecting to be partially blocked (thus the flickering oil pressure light when at idle speeds). I feel this has possibly been the major factor in engine/pump starvation that even leads to the sludging problems? Second, if indeed the balance chain is there, I will be able to inspect it further and potentially (or even probably) remove it.
I recongize this method is not as "thorough" as acutally replacing the balance chain, guides, etc., but I don't know if I can justify this type of work on this car. It seems as if others (previous posts by YAHOO (?)) have indicated this method of removing the chain has been quite successful for a very long time with no problems.
Thanks for all the advice. Oh, the auto-rx I feel did a good job. The oil sure was black removing the "rinse" stage, and I feel it was worth it. In my case, I think the black, "sooty" chunks are just too much for it to break down, however. Something is leading to my engine pressure light coming on.
Acutally, Anders or others, could the pressure light be on again because the releif valve is stuck again, not sending oil up to the engine, but recycling back to the pan??
