That is very interesting, Anders. And if the above IS sludge, then I wasn't nearly there. I did not see any deposits like this on the valves, etc. The cover had junk, and the wall around the timing chain had this sooty black stuff, but nothing nearly as bad as shown above. Again, I believe it is a "sliding scale", but it is good to know that at least I don't have the worst out there.

So, you have seen many balance shaft problems w/o sludging problems? But again, you mention that the pressure light is often broken. So, there are pressure problems w/o sludge? Again, this could be due to balance sprockets, etc, scoring and "sticking" the relief valve open? DOes this sound right.
