I have noticed a little rattling when I put in 87, but not that much and it has to be hot. I would not think that the 185hp would be possible without the recommended 90 octane. I would think that you would get less power with a lower octane and a bit more with the higher grade stuff. I have always wondered if you could get 200 hp from the base 9-3 just by putting in 93 octane, I mean the computer controls everything, and saab just never said anything about it since the intercooler was smaller on the base and because of heat the power could not be sustained. Anyhow, check your owner's manual, I know it says 87 is the minimum, but elsewhere it calls for the 90. I know that I get more power and better boost with 93. I don't know if the boost is just hitting earlier or what, but I keep premium in it. This winter I plan on playing around with other octanes when the weather gets colder and the air more suitable for lower octane.
