What you did is over rev the engine way over its design. The valve train will not function at those rpm's and the valves will not close as the springs cannot return the valves that fast. This is called floating the valves. The valves then hit the pistons and the valves get bent, and the pistons can get broken. Other things that can happen is bent or broken rods, rods through the side of the block, broken crankshafts etc.
There is nothing that can be done to prevent this kind of rpm overspeed. It is under the complete control of the driver with a manual gear box and standard clutch.
