Presumably, he was in 5th at say 70 mph. That's about 2700-2800 rpm. The gear box ratio is 0.66 compared to 1.76 for 2nd. So straight from 5th to 2nd without slowing - engine rpm goes from 2700 to 2700 * 1.76 / 0.66 =7200. That seems marginal for avoiding danage as the engine has redline of 6500. If he was going faster than 70 mph, then the engine rpm is way up there
