Your choice depends on what you'll be doing with it and how much you think the car's worth. My wife and I bought an '01 9-3 SE last January because we were expecting a baby and we wanted a safe car with a huge trunk -- we got both in the 9-3. We also got a good deal -- sticker was $34070 but we got a $2206 corporate discount and a $5500 dealer incentive so we paid $26364 + tax/license. I think that's exactly what the car is worth. Not much more and certainly NOT $34K!
Personally, I wanted the Acura TL (I know, BORING!) because I feared Saab's reputation for reliability and depreciation. Well, after almost 12000 miles we've filled every cubic inch of trunk space with baby stuff and the car's had some annoying initial quality issues (valve cover gaskets replaced). It's also extremely comfortable for long drives, the engine is spectacular, gas mileage is good, Saab service has been excellent, my wife loves the car (no small feat!), my insurance rates are low, and I have peace of mind that my family is in a safe vehicle.
I'd also recommend getting the SE over the base model. Just make sure you get a great price!
