Damn... I'm behind schedule! I have 23K mi. on mine and it still shifts just like the day it was new. "Worst in the industry..." Got any real facts to back that one up?
Now... for a real answer... The positives on the 9-3 are the classic SAAB design, the seats, a great 2.0L engine that has been in production for years but still performs very well - and yes - the transmission. This engine is designed to be turbocharged from the ground up and has extraordinary longevity when taken care of properly (i.e. regular oil changes, etc.) If you're looking for the fun-factor, the turbo will kick you in the ass on demand leaving a dumb smile on your face. The mid-range torque (what will get your from 40-100mph in no time for passing maneuvers) is awesome!
The manual is a little notchy for some but the clutch in general is pretty forgiving (unlike, say, a BMW 3-series). I like the way it feels and no signs of any problems yet. Worst in the industry? I think not. SAAB simply could not get away with manufacturing automobiles where every one of them was "expected" to have catastrophic transmission failures at 15,000mi... and even if you did have a problem, it would be under warranty at that point anyway.
