I find the 2-3 and 3-4 shifts on my 1999 9-3 SE HOT to be the smoothest shifts I make. 1-2 is a bit notchy, and 4-5 is awkward, but who needs to shift quickly from 4-5 anyway?
I get a little grinding on cold days sometimes when I shift into reverse, but that is my own fault (bad incident parked on a downslope two years ago.) This is correctable if I first drop the shifter into fourth (leaving clutch engaged) before I put it in reverse--now a habit.
Compared to a BMW 330ci, I find the Saab clutch more forgiving. The BMW has more precise action on the throws, but I've gotten used to my SAAB. Interestingly enough, I find the clutch and shifter on a 2002 9-5 Aero to be more similar to the BMW than my 9-3.
Mr Roper doesn't know what he's talking about. He must have abused his car going into third at some point.
