You are assuming that all of those people who bought 9-3s bought them BECAUSE they had a hatch. There are certainly a lot for whom that is the case, and long-term SAAB owners would be in that category, but think of the many people who bought because of the value, safety, performance, and oh yeah, I guess I might use all that space in the hatch every now and then, but it's not a deal breaker. All of those people who decided to try a SAAB, but not primarily because they needed a hatch, will still be potential SAAB buyers, and perhaps likely SAAB buyers because they enjoyed their 9-3 and learned what we all know.
I bought a SAAB because I drove a friend's aging 9000 sedan and was stunned. Went to the dealer and got a great deal on a 6K mile '98 900SE coupe and said good riddance to a Ford Explorer. I didn't buy because of the hatch, I bought because of all the other aspects of the car. Later I found out how useful the hatch can be.
Now, roughly 4.5 years later, I'm on my 2nd SAAB.
Just my 2 cents,
John
