The white plastic part that you describe is the part that continually failed on my car. The Saab technical bulletin has the mechanic lube the inside of the air distribution box. This only serves as a temporary fix and eventually the problem may come back. The only permanent fix is to change the distribution box with the new design from Saab. If you order the box, it should be the new design. If you need the part numbers just let me know.

The reason behind the problem is that the original box was built to improper tolerances and eventually the box internals start to bind, causing the knob to be difficult to turn. The white plastic piece happens to be the weakest link in the system and therefore is the part to break. In cars with ACC, the box is the same but there is a small electric motor that turns the distribution box. In these cars, there will be a clicking noise coming from the gears of the motor as it struggles against the binding of the distribution box.

If there are still questions to be asked just let me know, I probably have an answer on most of the non-ACC climate control issues. I should know, changing out the box leads to lots of learning.
