lack of power makes big difference!

I have a stock stereo and replaced my front (dash) and rear speakers separately and here's what I found:
With new fronts, it sounds very good (the front anyways). However, after installing new rears speakers, the front sounds more harsh and distorted, increasing with volume. This tells me that its the amp's reaching its power limits. As with all amps (in this case, the stock head unit, which is 15W to 20W per channel?) the higher you go in power output (volume), the higher the distortion.
A simple test by changing the fade to front (i.e. tune out the rear speakers) made the front sound better again. Of course, this is not a long term solution..
I don't have any definite feedback here on the actual sound quality of adding an external amp, but several people have reported "good results", mostly on the lower end (bass). I'll probably add an external amp to drive my front and rears later in the spring/summer. I have to figure out where to put the amp without losing trunk space..
