Interesting notion, so I went with it...

Reading this new revelation that sheet metal is really a poor substitute for something like good old MDF, I took my JBL-amplified rears out of their factory mountings and installed them into Q-Logic 6x9 enclosures. I applied Velcro (hook side) to the bottoms, effectively keeping the boxes *firmly* planted to the bottom of the trunk.
The difference in response is really awesome. The sound is so much tighter, and I am better able to position the rears wherever I like. One of the biggest problems I've always had, even after amplifying the rears, is that the sound never really filled out well for the individual driving the car; the sweet spot was always somewhere directly in the center of the car. Now, the sound is phenomenal for the driver, and I am totally looking forward to tomorrows drive in to work!
Depending on my level of motivation, I could now install adapter plates in the now empty rear locations and drop in a set of 6.5s. Of course, running on factory power, the benefit may hardly be worth it. But it'd make for an 8 speaker setup!
