Nick is right. As you reach the upper limits of your (stock) amp, the signal distorts even though the speaker can handle more. In a case like this the speaker needs more power to perform well, and you can do this with an external amplifier. This way you dont have to crank the amp inside the head unit to get sufficient power delivery to the speakers. There is enough room for one under a front seat, and the wiring from there is easier than from the trunk. You would probably do well with 25-70 more watts/channel [but dont overpower and ruin your new speakers]. You can do 2 channels (just for the rear) or 4 channels (if you put new speakers up front)[even if you only do 2 channels, you can tweak the fader to get the sound right], and many amps have built in EQ. Its a good way to make the stock head sound better cheap. half.com usually has good deals for these.
