SID Fuel Economy (long)...

You would think I would have learned my lesson by now...
Sometime last year, I was cruising down the interstate watching the "DTE" reading on the SID. I got caught in a long stretch between gas stations and the DTE got down to 6 miles. Seconds later the car was sputtering and cutting out. I got really lucky and had just enough momentum to coast into the next station. Close one.
About 3 months ago, I was within 3 miles of my destination with a DTE reading of 16 miles. That turned out to be too far away. I ran out of gas with 15 miles still showing on the SID. Had to pay $25 for two gallons of gas delivered.
Today, I was about 2 miles from the gas station with 28 miles showing remaining on the DTE when sputter...sputter I managed to make it within a short walking distance of the station before she died. I had to walk about 500yds and buy a gas can and a gallon of gas just to make it to the gas station.
6 miles...OK, I should know better than tempt fate.
15 miles...Something's just not right here.
28 miles...WTF???
This is all while driving a consistent speed and maintaining about 31 mpg on the interstate. Almost all of my driving is like this, maybe 95% interstate and freeway driving, and I'm always at about 31mpg (I reset afetr every tank).
Is this something that can be calibrated? I also frequently drive a 2000 Jeep Gr.Cherokee that always UNDERestimates DTE. Several times I've pushed it past 0 miles and never run out of gas. Where is the "safe" zone in my Saab? As soon as the friggin' gas light comes on? Maybe resetting the computer at every refill is making it less accurate? I don't get it. My old 900 has a flaky needle on the gas gauge, but when that light comes on, I always have 4 gallons (about 100 miles) before I refill, and it always takes the same amount of gas to fill it.
Anyone else have this issue or some insight.
Thanks,
Brian
