Too bad bringing a car in for service often seems like a major gamble. Doesn't seem to matter what sort of car or where service all that much either sometimes. I never want to have it done just before a trip. Here are a few of mine:
VW in for charging system issue. After testing they replaced alternator. Picked up car and it died about 12 blocks away. They hadn't tighted the battery cables after testing. So I had to finish their job for them (foreign car independent).
900 turbo in for bad starter. A few blocks after picking up car it began to sound sort of loud and then began to run like crap and then stalled a couple times (had to keep revs up to prevent it). Once I could pull over out of traffic found that air intake pipe hadn't been tighted back up and was mostly hanging off at this point. Finished another job. (euro car indy)
JEEP brought in for oil change. After it was back home noticed oil under vehicle on drive. Returned to dealer same day on way out of town. They took it back in looked it over tightened it all up and left it on the lift a while to watch and make sure there was no issue. Declared it good to go and I was off. Next evening noticed increased engine and immediately looked at the oil gage. What I saw caused me to immediately shut it down and I coasted to a stop. Had lost at least 3 to 4 quarts. Finished another job for which we had paid and made to vists. (A completely incompetent Jeep dealer)
There are plenty more including SAAB dealer stories but this is getting too long. Maybe a couple from when I was a kid before my own cars:
Oil change performed on parents 99. Once car was home I opened hood and found oil cap sitting on air box. Small amount of splatter but luckily caught this one in time. (indy)
Parents 99 fine for first few days after tune up but then starts running like crap. Eventually discovered due to improper sprark plug wires. (Saab dealer) Couple years later guess what? Same dealer same issue.
And it isn't just mechanics. Broken window glass replaced by glass shop. Aftward I checked out car and noticed that you could still hear all the glass in the door when you shut it (had broken when rolled down into door). Being a bored kid I took apart door panel and cleared it out. I think this was the first time I finished an incomplete repair. This seem like a good spot to stop.
It is often said you get what you pay for. I say your lucky if you get what you pay for.
