Its all an averaged number; If you reset the DTE, fill the tank, and cruise at 65mph until empty it will factor the DTE using a very efficient MPG. If you then refill and start driving city roads and revving high, the numbers will not prove accurate.
Think of the car saying this, "This is the amount of miles you have left in the tank if you manage to keep the exact MPG as you have been since the last time you reset the DTE."
