I had the same problem with my 00 9-5 Aero. Including the slipping vise grips. I do believe I read on either this or the 9-5 board where somebody welded a bar onto the plug to get leverage but I don't have welding equipment. What I did you should only try if you are very adventurous. First I got a new drain plug and washer. Then when I got up the nerve, I marked off a smaller drill, about 3/16 maybe to use with an easy-out when I got the pressure off the plug and as a guide for the next step. I measured and marked this drill on the new oil plug to make sure it wouldn't go all the way through.
Then I a got a 1/2 inch drill and using the smaller hole as a guide and being careful to keep it centered in the plug, I drilled the head off the oil plug until nothing was left but the threaded portion in the oil pan. The remaining hole in the plug wasn't deep enough (or was too wide) for the easy-out but the plug was so loose that it came out just fine using a small screwdriver wedged in the remaining hole. Yes, I actually did this.
By the way, I now use a 6 point 12.7 mm socket (also know as a 1/2 inch) to remove the plug. It takes some jiggling to get it on but I haven't rounded any oil plugs since.
Brooks,
