Cycling the overheat switch

Is the number of times the switch "cycled" a function of how many times I put on the A/C?? OR is it a function of how many times the compressor overheats?? The overheat switch failed in the "overheated" setting, so I would assume that the switch is cycled whenever the A/C comes on.
The bulletin makes it sound like the overheat switch only fails if it has sensed overheating several times. If the compressor overheated several times, would I not notice something to alert me to the issue over the past 10 years?
My car is almost 10 years old, used mostly for short trips and in hot climates for 80% of the time. Is it possible that I just wore out the thermo switch and the rest of the system is fine?
