I've gone from an '86 SPG to an '02 Viggen a year and a half ago. Before the SPG I ha a '78, 99 Turbo. I loved the 99/900 platform. I don't think I'd get along as well with a 9.3 if it weren't a Viggen. Not to sound like a snob, but I find some short comings in the 9.3 the the Viggen's character, power, seats, etc. can have me over look.

IMO some of the 9.3 short falls are:
• technical issues like sludge, head gaskets, weak pistons on '99 Viggen, etc.
• trunk space not as usable, nor flat when rear seat folded down,
• access to rear seats on 3dr very difficult especially on Viggen
• front suspension noisy
• wind noise at A pillars at speeds above 80 mph
• dirty engine compartment (is salt country it's impossible to keep clean the lower front and throttle body area)
• folding the rear seats down reduces front leg room
• not as good in the snow as my SPG despite traction control (pretty useless I find)

Some of the pros for the 9.3:
• fuel economy (my Viggen gets 32 mpg at 80 mph)
• safer updated design with air bags, ABS, etc.
• updated AC
• cup holder (that really sucks!)
• remote entry
• moon roof that tilts and slides
• heated rear seats on some models

For Viggen model add:
• power
• amazing seats
• power
• feel, character, sound, looks
• power!!!

As others have mentioned, with some minor modifications the 9.3s can be improved quite a bit with respect to handling. The Viggen can be tamed with certain modifications and HP can be increased relatively easily.

Best of luck with whatever decision you make
Robert
