As far as I know, Mercedes antifreeze is G-05. VW uses two different types, depending on year: G-11 and G-12. SAAB and BMW use G-48.

VW's G-12 in particular is incompatible with G-48. G-11 can be used, however it is different chemistry, so not ideal.

G-05 is excellent but also uses different chemistry. OK to use but not ideal.

Having said all this, I think anything at all would be OK as long as the system is thoroughly flushed prior to chemistry change. And as long as different chemistries are not mixed. Yes, despite a lot of widespread fear, Dexcool can be used, too. It works extremely well in most cooling systems. Dexcool was developed by French company Total -- not Texaco, not GM.
