He does it as a last resort.
If the lugs are just loosened a coupla turns, it should (THEORETICALLY) be okay. If all else failed, what I'd probably do is go to an empty parking lot and drive in a tight circle at about 20 mph and see if it cracks loose. You'll hear it! Maybe do a figure 8.
However, this is just a wild ass suggestion and is not recommended by automotive safety and repair experts. No warranties or guarantees are implied or included and you do this entirely at your own risk to life, limb, wheels, tires, axles, hubs, and suspension components. YMMV.
