How Stuff Works explains it pretty well actually... A standard differential just splits torque 50/50 to the opposing wheels. A limited slip has the ability to transfer torque to the wheel with traction when the other is slipping.

And here's a really great video of how a regular differential works. It's so cool. Sorry for lack of link.
