I've had my stock Viggen spin it wheels at highway speeds. Just shift into third on some small two laner to pass someone and you'll see some loss in traction. I used to think my cluch was slipping until I saw how worn down my front right Goodyear F1 had gotten.

Now back to your question about city driving and rpm. I'm assuming that when you say city driving you are also including some of the 4 laners with posted speeds of 60 kph most of which move at 80 kph.

I find my revs between 2 and 3 while cruising in the city. To be safe, I want the engine in a place where I can easily accelerate out of a situation just as well as brake for one....no highway type coasting for me. The 'labouring' an engine comes to mind although I don't think a Viggen will ever 'bog' under acceleration given all the available torque. However, at 2K turbo lag will be more pronounced at acceleration will be more explosive (hard on the drive train) than at 3K.

This could be an interesting thread as I'm sure this has lots to do with driving style but I do think there is a 'sweet spot' which is good for both the engine and drive train.
